Women Standing Together for Wellness This October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month)

Some of our closest friendships grow from ordinary moments: a shared story, a good laugh, or a coffee date that lasts longer than planned. Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed each October, offers an opportunity to deepen those connections while caring for ourselves and standing together as women.

You don’t need a personal connection to breast cancer to be part of the conversation. Simply sharing experiences, listening without judgment, and making time for one another can help build a community where women feel understood and welcome. It’s about knowing we have people to celebrate with, lean on, and turn to as we move through life together.

How October Became Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month first began in 1985 as a weeklong campaign co-led by the American Cancer Society. Its early focus was educating women about screening and mammograms. That effort grew into the annual October observance. Since 1946, the American Cancer Society has invested over $5 billion in research, funding many innovative researchers - of whom 53 have won the Nobel Prize for their groundbreaking work.

Today, Breast Cancer Awareness Month brings attention to research, education, and the experiences of people affected by the disease. For women everywhere however, this is a great time to support each other focusing on our physical and mental health, nutrition, exercise, and making high quality time with family and friends.

Practical Steps for Health & Wellness

Ask a healthcare professional when you should have mammograms and how often, based on your age and individual risk. Screening can find breast cancer before symptoms appear, so familiarize yourself with how your breasts normally look and feel, and stay up with your regular appointments. If you notice any changes then contact a healthcare professional, even if it’s not time for your next screening or if your most recent mammogram was normal.

Breast health is just one part of a much bigger picture for a long and healthy life. Sleep, nourishing meals, physical activity, mental health, and preventive care are all key components for a healthier you! Making room for yourself should also include the people and activities that bring you joy. Take a walk with a friend, try a recipe together, spend an afternoon doing something you love, or try out an activity with a friend that neither of you have done before but were always curious about. Caring for ourselves doesn’t have to mean going it alone.

Standing Together with Women in Our Community

At Fresh Produce, we’ve always been inspired by women who bring their own personality, confidence, and joy to everyday life. But being strong doesn’t mean having everything handled all the time. There’s room to celebrate each other’s milestones, exchange ideas, and be ourselves without having everything figured out.

That sense of belonging grows when we keep showing up for one another. Share a favorite book, send flowers just because, or invite someone new to join your next lunch. Make those catch-ups a regular part of life - a true habit, not something only saved for special occasions.

When a friend does need extra support, listen and let her guide what would feel helpful. If she’s dealing with a health condition, ask if she’d like some company on her next appointment for an extra listening ear and notetaker for follow-up instructions. If she’s had a stressful day at work, check if she’d like you to show up with tea and snacks when she’s done for the day.

Support Women’s Wellness in Style

Join us in supporting a special cause around women's health research with our coastal Turtle Hat, a stylish baseball cap designed exclusively for Fresh Produce. More than just a soft and stylish accessory, 100% of hat proceeds go to the Emory Winship Cancer Institute to fund cancer prevention, treatment, and support.

This hat features a sea turtle, chosen for its symbolism of wisdom, longevity, endurance, and persistence, sometimes against incredible odds. It’s also a nod to the coastal life we share with our customers: turtles enjoy a little time in the water and a little time on land, just like us.

Care That Continues Beyond October

Breast Cancer Awareness Month - and every month thereafter - is a wonderful opportunity to talk more openly about women's health and wellness and the many ways that women can create beauty and joy for one another.
